Hurricanes are Better Than Earthquakes
|
 |
Let me start off by saying don't panic, Smokey (my cat) and I are safe and sound. As I am sure you are aware, on Wednesday at 8:08pm, San Francisco had a 4.4 earthquake, the first one I have ever experienced! I am pleased to announce that I came out of it unscathed, and only one action figure was knocked off my desk at work.
(click the image too see the earthquake minutes after!)
At the time I was sitting at my desk at work, and I began to hear some loud thumping on the ground. Now I was one of the only ones still there, and we have hollow floors, so I just assumed someone was running around my area being obnoxious. I was literally getting out of my seat to yell, "knock off that crap!" when the quake REALLY kicked in. I have to say it was a lot more powerful then I was expecting, and I would also like to claim that I handled the crisis with confidence and composure... but reality is it scared the poop out of me. In the grand total of ten seconds it lasted the following thoughts went through my head: "Shit, what do I do? Run outside, get under my desk, get help? Fuck, this wasn't covered in new employee orientation!".
So this brings me to my conclusion that I would rather take a hurricane than an earthquake any day. When a hurricane hits you have five days to get your butt out of the way. If anyone dies in a hurricane, well that's just natural selection. This earthquake business, you have no idea when it is coming. With my luck I will either be in the Bay Bridge (which is not a matter of if it will collapse, but rather how fast will if fall into the bay), or in the Marina (which is built on land fill and will fall into the ocean as well).
Speaking of hurricanes, I would give my condolences to my best friend Chris Poynor. He has been waiting a long time for a hurricane named after him to mess up our hometown of Gainesville Florida, and it looked like he might get his wish with tropical storm "Chris". Unfortunately today it was down graded to just a tropical depression, we are all very disappointed, and in no way does the shameful impotence of this storm reflect upon you Chris. |
