New Animation Clip

Hey everyone, I just finished a little fencing "cross over advance" walk cycle. Thought I would share it. I am going to have an attack and finishing move to add to it in the next week or so.

"On Guard!"

F*ck Tim Burton

For those of you who are Kevin Smith fans, and if you are on this site its a good chance you are, I was just given to links to video of him giving a lecture at a college. They are both hysterical and well worth your time watching.

The first one entitled "Superman Lives" Smith talks about how back in the mid 90s he got a chance to write a script for a new Superman movie. However before he could start writing, the producer gave him three directives:
1) Superman can't wear the suit
2) Superman can't fly
3) Superman must fight a giant spider. Yes I shit you not, a giant spider.

Of Course hilarity ensues and its rather an insightful look into just how movies are made in Hollywood.

The second one is "F*ck Tim Burton". Apparently after Burton's new Planet of the Apes, Smith made a joke that Burton stole the idea for the "monkey Lincoln memorial" from a comic book he had done some years before. Well Tim got his panties all in a bundle over it and made an amusing stink about it. Again, hilarity ensues.

New Commercial From Sylvain Chomet

One of my all time favorite animator/directors, Sylvain Chomet (creater of the "Triplets of Beleville") has made a wonderful television commercial for an insurance company of all things.

I am eagerly awaiting the next couple of films Chomet is currently animating, but this gives me a nice little hold over until then.

Also I updated the site layout a tad. The demo reel and resume are also updated, not to mention I have managed to hack the file sizes in half.

Knees Have Feelings Too!

Animation Observation of the day: Knees have arcs too! It occurs to me that knees have not been getting the proper treatment they deserve. Yea sure I have been keying them, but I have been treating them like the red headed step child of controls, they are there but we don't talk about them. Then today the damndest thing happened, the right leg control tapped on the screen and asked "Please sir, can I have some more?".

"Mooooooooore?!"

So from this day forth I promise I shall not neglect knees ever again, I raise my glass to you knee control!

A'chu, son of A'Sneeze

I think a sneeze is one of the most satisfying of the involuntary reactions. And by the same token the sneeze that just won't erupt is one of the more irritating.

Sleeping with the Enemy

Today I took a hop skip closer to the dark side. Today I adorned a black spandex suite covered in ping pong balls (professionally known as "markers") and pretended to fence an imaginary opponent. Yes my friends, today I used motion capture. My animator heart cries a little bit every time I hear those two words, but I have to say that in reality motion capture is pretty nifty, possibly even cool. SCAD just acquired an infrared mocap system and they needed a guinea pig to "film" so the professors can learn the software. For those of you who aren't computers geeks, it basically works by having twelve cameras set up in a box, each emitting infra light. The light is reflected off specially covered balls attached to strategic locations (shoulder, elbow, wrist, etc) so that way each ones movement can be tracked. These cameras are ultra sensitive, picking up motion in the millimeters at up to hundreds of frames per second. Today we just captured the raw animation data, and next week I am going to learn how to clean up the data and bring it into the Motion Builder software. I don't think I am in danger of wanting to become a full time mocap artist, but at least now I am starting to get a better understanding of it.
